Puy de Dome is a sleeping volcano of the Puys, in the Massif Central. It is located fifteen kilometers from Clermont-Ferrand and gave its name to the Puy-de-Dôme department.
The Gothic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Clermont-Ferrand was preceded in the same location, three Christian shrines. Most of its current building dates from the XIIIᵉ century.
